Located less than 15 minutes from Twin Pine Manor B&B is one of America’s coolest small towns: Lititz, Pennsylvania. It features unique shops, an excellent range of eateries, well-known festivals, and a notable place in history. It’s a great place to spend the afternoon exploring and finish with an excellent meal or maybe a flight of spirits at a local distillery.
You don’t need to do more than wander down its picturesque Main Street to get a taste of its historic roots. As the first town in Pennsylvania to establish a historic district, the buildings lining Main Street date back to the mid-1700s and feature a blend of English, German, and Victorian architecture that makes it so unique.
But it’s not just the buildings that make Lititz historic. The town was founded in 1756 by a group of Moravians seeking religious freedom after attempts to find a home in Europe failed. The congregation and all-girls school they founded are still operating today. Even the city park, Lititz Springs Park, dates back to 1741. Pro tip: there’s free parking, and you can feed the ducks.
The town also has a history of innovation and quality products. The first commercial pretzel bakery in America was founded in 1861, under the name Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which developed the hard (crispy) pretzel. Take a tour to try your hand at twisting your own soft pretzel.
Milton Hershey tried his hand at caramel in Lititz before moving on to Hershey, PA, and turning to chocolate instead. Lititz has its own history of chocolate, with Wilbur Chocolate being produced there for more than a century. Small batch, handmade chocolates are still being crafted in their store, where you can also sample their classic Wilbur Buds. For a walking tour or more info on the town’s historic roots, contact the Lititz Historical Foundation.
In more recent years, Lititz has also become an unlikely hub in the music industry. Since the inception of the Rock Lititz, more than ten years ago, artists like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga have been utilizing their custom-built rehearsal space to work out the details of their live shows before taking them on tour. The campus has continued to grow to include a hotel, a live music venue, and even a climbing gym, coworking space, and a brewery.
